Passing of Dr. Mohamad Adam El-Sheikh

In the Name of Allāh ﷻ, the Most Merciful, the Compassionate,

On behalf of the Fiqh Council of North America, we express our condolences at the passing of Shaykh Dr. Mohamad Adam El-Sheikh, a distinguished member of our council and a pillar in the North American Muslim community. Shaykh El-Sheikh departed this world on April 14, 2024, after facing illness. We pray that Allāh ﷻ accepts his contributions to the Ummah and make them a means of Sadaqah Jāriyah for him.

Born in 1945, Shaykh El-Sheikh graduated from Omdurman Islamic University in Sudan before moving to the United States to further his education, where he earned multiple advanced degrees in Islamic Law, including a Masters of Comparative Jurisprudence from Howard University and a PhD in Comparative Jurisprudence from Temple University. He served as a Sharia judge in Sudan and later as an Imam and educator in the United States.

Shaykh El-Sheikh dedicated his life to serving the Muslim community. He played an instrumental role in founding the Dar Al-Hijrah mosque and was a crucial figure in the establishment of the Fiqh Council itself. He was a founding member of the Shari`ah Scholars Association of America, and active in the American Muslim Jurists Association (AMJA), along with a host of other national and international fiqh bodies. His contributions to the Council and the broader Islamic community were immense, playing a key role in the welfare of Muslims in North America.

We pray to Allāh ﷻ, the Most Compassionate and Merciful, to grant him the highest abode in Jannah al-Firdaus, alongside the Prophets, the Righteous, and the Martyrs. May Allāh ﷻ shower His mercy upon him and bestow patience upon his family and all who grieve his loss.

Indeed, we belong to Allāh ﷻ, and indeed, we will return to Him ﷻ.
