Statement on Student Encampments

The Fiqh Council of North America acknowledges the ongoing student-led protests across the US, which seek to hold academic institutions accountable for their associations with Israel, described by the United Nations and leading human rights organizations as an occupier of Palestine and perpetrator of actions deemed genocidal. We commend the students of all backgrounds and faiths for their commitment to Palestinian freedom and urge them to continue their advocacy within the bounds of the law and guided by the principled framework of Shariah that integrates prophetic valor with ethical rigor. Their actions resonate with the Quranic injunction: “And let there be [arising] from you a nation inviting to [all that is] good, enjoining what is right and forbidding what is wrong, and those will be the successful.” (Quran 3:104). We extend our solidarity and respect.

The Fiqh Council also encourages other actions, within the legal framework, to stop this aggression. These could include judicious boycotting of businesses that are directly aiding and abetting Israeli occupation, or shunning employment at corporations that are involved in the conflict.
